The 2025 BMW M5 introduces a hybrid V8 engine with 717 hp and advanced tech. Despite increased weight, it promises dynamic performance with a 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds.

The all-new 2025 BMW M5 has arrived, boasting more power than ever before. The major highlight for fans of the BMW M series is the model’s embrace of electrification. This shift is as significant as when the M5 transitioned from a rear-wheel-drive-only layout to all-wheel drive, and it is sure to spark debates among enthusiasts, especially regarding its weight.

A hybrid M5 has long been anticipated, and BMW has retained the 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 engine. The hybrid setup delivers a combined power output of 717 hp (727 PS / 535 kW) and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque, making it 30 hp more powerful than the Valour with the same peak torque.

The internal combustion engine alone produces 577 hp (569 bhp / 424 kW) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque, available from as low as 1,800 rpm. This engine, similar to the one in the M-range’s flagship XM super-SUV, is complemented by an electric motor that adds 194 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque.

However, the hybrid setup has increased the vehicle’s weight significantly. The 2025 M5 weighs 5,390 lbs (2,445 kg), a 24% increase over the outgoing model’s 4,345 lbs (1,971 kg). Despite the 16% power increase, this added weight means the new M5 is slightly slower to 60 mph (96 km/h), taking 3.4 seconds compared to the previous model’s 3.2 seconds.

Top speed remains limited to 155 mph (250 km/h) or 190 mph (306 km/h) with the M Driver’s package. The hybrid system allows for a zero-emission electric-only mode of 25 miles (40 km).

The 2025 M5 continues to feature an all-wheel-drive system, with the option to switch to a rear-biased setup or even lock the front drive for classic rear-wheel-drive dynamics. The Active M Differential manages power distribution between the wheels to counteract understeer.

BMW has also introduced numerous technical updates, including model-specific engine and transmission mounts, a redesigned suspension with lightweight aluminum components, and an eight-speed «M Steptronic» gearbox with a patented pre-gearing stage to increase the electric motor’s torque output.

The styling of the 2025 M5 includes an enclosed gloss black grille with an illuminated surround, wider arches, 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels, and large brake discs. The interior features M Multifunction seats, a new steering wheel design with standard heating, and BMW’s Operating System 8.5 with M-specific graphics.

The 2025 BMW M5 will debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month, with production starting in July at BMW’s Dingolfing plant. Pricing begins at $119,500 plus $1,175 for destination and handling, a 16% increase over the 2018 M5’s launch price.
