Elon Musk announced that there will be no refreshed Model Y in 2023, despite rumors. Tesla continues to improve its vehicles continuously, but a major update for the Model Y won’t arrive this year.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has dispelled rumors of a refreshed Model Y launching this year.

Nearly 10 months after Tesla unveiled the extensively updated Model 3, many anticipated a similar update for the Model Y, known internally as ’Juniper,’ which was expected to incorporate many of the same updates as the Model 3.

Over the weekend, a popular X account managed by a Tesla shareholder suggested that rumors had emerged about the refreshed Model Y debuting in July. However, Musk refuted these claims, stating, «No Model Y ‘refresh’ is coming out this year.» He added, «Tesla continuously improves its cars, so even a car that is 6 months newer will be a little better.»

For those following Tesla closely, Musk’s statement should not be surprising. In February, Tesla had already informed its delivery advisors that a refreshed Model Y would not launch this year. The communication to advisors mentioned, «We heard your feedback that some customers are waiting to place their Model Y order as they anticipate a refresh similar to the Model 3. It is important that we communicate transparently that there is no refresh for Model Y launching this year.»

Despite looking slightly outdated compared to the Model 3, the Model Y remains a strong seller for Tesla. In the U.S., Tesla sold an estimated 96,729 Model Ys in the first quarter of this year, representing 35.4% of the total new EV market, and outselling the Model 3 by more than three times during the same period.

When the Model Y is eventually updated, it is expected to feature revised front and rear fascias while maintaining its overall shape. Interior changes might include the removal of steering column stalks, a slightly larger infotainment screen, and an ambient lighting system, similar to the Model 3 updates.
