Mercedes’ new all-electric G-Class, the G580 with EQ Technology, combines legendary off-road capability with advanced electric power, offering 579 hp and significant tech upgrades.

The all-electric G-Class, designated as the G580 with EQ Technology, marks a significant evolution in Mercedes’ iconic G-Class series. It introduces a fully electric powertrain that features four motors, one for each wheel, effectively eliminating the traditional internal combustion engine. This setup not only retains but enhances the G-Class’s renowned off-road capabilities.

Power and Performance

The electric G580 is equipped with a quad-motor setup that delivers a combined output of 579 horsepower and 859 pound-feet of torque. This surpasses even the powerful AMG G63, offering a more instantaneous torque application characteristic of electric vehicles (EVs). Despite being slightly slower in 0 to 60 mph acceleration compared to the gas-powered AMG, the electric G-Class is capped at a top speed of 112 mph, focusing more on torque and off-road proficiency than high-speed performance.

Off-Road Capabilities

The electric G-Class excels in off-road conditions with a maximum fording depth of 33.5 inches, surpassing both the G550 and G63. It can handle lateral slopes up to 35 degrees and offers 9.8 inches of ground clearance. The vehicle’s approach, departure, and breakover angles are also optimized for challenging terrains, maintaining its stature as a top-tier off-roader.

Technological Enhancements

The G580 with EQ Technology incorporates advanced technological features such as a two-speed transmission offering a low-range mode, a crawl function, and «G-Turn» capability for turning on the spot. Virtual differential locks through torque vectoring and adaptive adjustable dampers further enhance its off-road prowess.

Design and Features

Visually, the electric G-Class maintains the classic boxy silhouette but introduces a closed-off grille with an illuminated contour and optional aesthetic modifications like a rear storage box for charging cables and tools. The vehicle also includes subtle aerodynamic tweaks to improve efficiency without compromising its distinctive appearance.

Interior and Customization

Inside, the G-Class retains the familiar luxury of the regular models but integrates the latest Mercedes-Benz electronics and infotainment systems. It also offers unique features like the «transparent hood» via a 360-degree camera system, enhancing visibility and control in difficult driving conditions.

For the 2025 model year, the electric G-Class in the U.S. will be available exclusively as the Edition One, featuring special colors and trim options, including blue brake calipers and AMG Line and Night Package enhancements. Interior highlights include blue carbon fiber trim and an artificial «G-Roar» sound to mimic the traditional combustion engine noise.

Future Enhancements

Looking ahead, Mercedes plans to upgrade the electric G-Class’s battery with silicon anode chemistry, which is expected to increase the energy density significantly and boost the vehicle’s range, potentially a year after its initial launch.

This transition to electric reflects Mercedes’ commitment to innovation and sustainability, ensuring that even its most rugged vehicles align with modern environmental standards without sacrificing their legendary capabilities and appeal.
