The Mercedes-Maybach SL: Redefining Luxury in Roadsters

The Mercedes-AMG SL, introduced in 2021 as a roadster counterpart to the AMG GT, is expanding its lineup significantly. Following its role as the foundation for the exclusive AMG Mythos speedster, the SL is now poised to receive the Maybach treatment, catering to those seeking heightened luxury.

Teased officially in May 2022, the Mercedes-Maybach SL revealed a glimpse of its front end. Over two years later, spy photographers captured what appears to be the initial lightly camouflaged prototype during hot weather testing in Europe. 

While sharing most of its body with the standard SL, the prototype conceals its front end, likely concealing bespoke Maybach enhancements. The teaser hints at updates such as a lustrous grille, a hood ornament featuring the Maybach logo, and traditional Mercedes embellishments.

The prototype showcases dual trapezoidal exhaust outlets, a hallmark of Maybach models. Notably, the four-cylinder SL exhibits quad round tailpipes, whereas V8-powered variants (including the flagship E Performance hybrid) sport an equal number of trapezoidal pipes. Expect distinctive alloy wheels and increased chrome detailing throughout the body. 

Interior revisions will be paramount, with Maybach offering sumptuous materials and extensive customization options. This includes a broader palette compared to Mercedes Manufaktur, underscoring the premium positioning of the Maybach-branded SL. The featured prototype flaunts red upholstery that harmonizes with the retractable roof’s color.

Details on the Mercedes-Maybach SL’s powertrain remain speculative. However, it’s likely to inherit potent engines from the Mercedes-AMG SL lineup.

Regarding a potential 12-cylinder option, it seems improbable, given recent trends—Bentley’s Continental GTC Speed recently adopted an electrified V8 setup. The flagship Mercedes-AMG S63 S E Performance PHEV, producing 805 hp and 1,047 lb-ft of torque, should suffice for a luxury roadster.

Although the debut date for the Mercedes-Maybach SL remains uncertain, a showroom arrival by 2025 wouldn’t be surprising. In the meantime, speculative renderings based on initial teasers provide a glimpse of what’s to come.
