Recall Issued for Jeep Grand Cherokee to Install Critical Airbag Foam

Modern automotive safety technology is impressive, but it often relies on simple components. This is evident in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, where a piece of energy-absorbing foam is crucial for proper airbag function. A new recall aims to install this missing piece in seven Grand Cherokees that left the factory without it.

Jeep hasn’t disclosed the exact cause of the error, but starting on December 6, 2023, some Grand Cherokees were built without the necessary foam. This foam, located between the bumper cover and structural support, absorbs impact force in a crash and helps trigger the airbags. Jeep corrected the production issue by December 9, 2023.

Other vehicles with this problem were repaired before leaving the factory. However, seven vehicles reached dealer lots without the foam and now need to be fixed. Jeep plans to install the foam, which costs about $25 in the aftermarket, at no charge to the owners. Notifications to dealers and owners will be sent by July 5. This recall follows several others by Stellantis brands. In late April, Jeep and Ram recalled 12 vehicles due to rearview camera and ESC issues. Additionally, over 330,000 Jeeps have been recalled this year for various problems, including a defect that could cause the front wheels of the Grand Cherokee to fall off.
