The 2024 Ford F-150 is being recalled for a potential loss of steering control due to an incorrect fastener.

If it’s a day that ends in «y,» you can bet a Ford has been remembered. This time it’s the 2024 F-150, which faces a recall due to a potential «loss of steering control.»

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that an incorrect fastener might have been used to attach the lower steering shaft to the steering gear. Over time, this fastener can loosen and potentially disengage entirely, which could result in the steering system separating and causing a loss of control—a significant safety risk caused by simple human error. The recall report explains that a «box of fasteners intended for another use was incorrectly delivered to the station that secures the lower steering column I-shaft and mixed with the correct fasteners.» This issue originated at the Kansas City Assembly Plant and initially went unnoticed.

On April 11, an incorrect fastener was identified, prompting an investigation. This led to the discovery of a mix of fasteners with varying sizes (25 mm and 37 mm) and material types (8.8 and 10.9). The correct fastener engages seven threads, while the incorrect one fully engages only two threads and partially engages three others, increasing the risk of disengagement due to limited thread engagement.

Ford is unaware of any accidents or injuries related to this recall, which involves replacing the lower steering shaft fastener on affected models. Owners will be notified later this month, but the recall impacts only 385 trucks, a small fraction of the best-selling vehicle in America.
