The Cupra Born marks a significant milestone for the Cupra brand as its first all-electric vehicle, blending sporty performance with eco-friendly credentials. This model, which premiered officially in May 2021, has transitioned from the initial «el-Born» concept to the production-ready Cupra Born, showcasing the brand’s commitment to electrification and performance. The Born offers a choice of two powertrains, both rear-wheel drive, with the base model delivering 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) and the more potent version offering up to 231 PS (170 kW; 228 hp) with Boost Mode, enabling a spirited 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) acceleration in just 6.6 seconds for the flagship model.
The Cupra Born is available with three battery options, ranging from 45 kWh to 77 kWh, catering to a variety of driving needs with ranges stretching from 340 to 540 kilometers (211 to 335 miles) on a single charge. Its fast-charging capability allows for up to 80% battery recharge in about 35 minutes, promising convenience for drivers on the go. Inside, the Born is equipped with a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system and features high-quality materials throughout the cabin, including Seaqual Yarn for the seats, a recycled material derived from plastic waste from the Mediterranean Sea.
The car’s design and engineering focus on delivering a blend of fun driving dynamics and practicality, with the Born positioned as a «warm hatch» that offers an engaging driving experience without the full intensity of a traditional hot hatch. It’s been praised for its balanced performance, including strong off-the-line acceleration and responsive handling, thanks in part to its rear-wheel-drive setup and carefully tuned chassis.
Despite its many strengths, including safety features like autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, the Born lacks the VW Group’s Travel Assist semi-autonomous driving feature. The steering and brakes have received positive feedback for their performance, contributing to the Born’s overall driving enjoyment. However, it’s been noted that the regenerative braking system could benefit from greater adjustability, and some users may find the touch-sensitive controls for climate and volume less intuitive than traditional buttons.
In the competitive landscape of electric vehicles, the Cupra Born stands out for its combination of fun driving dynamics, distinctive styling, and a commitment to sustainability, though it faces stiff competition from other models like the Tesla Model 3 and upcoming offerings from BYD and Volvo. While its pricing may place it at a premium compared to some rivals, the Cupra Born offers a unique proposition for drivers seeking an electric vehicle that doesn’t compromise on performance or style.
