Hyundai Recalls 4,000+ Palisades Over Engine Valve Spring Defects

Hyundai has announced a recall affecting over 4,000 of its 2024 model year Palisades due to a critical issue with the vehicle's valve springs.

This fault poses a significant risk, as the defective valve springs could potentially break and create a hole in the engine block. Despite the alarming nature of the defect, it’s estimated that only one percent of the recalled vehicles are likely to be affected. Nonetheless, the potential for such a failure underscores the seriousness of the recall, especially given that the Palisade is exclusively equipped with a 3.8-liter V6 engine capable of producing 291 horsepower in the U.S. market.

The recall was initiated after Hyundai discovered that 4,235 of its 2024 Palisade models might be at risk. The discovery of the issue began with a dealer report in October 2023, detailing a stalling problem traced back to a fractured valve spring. A subsequent corporate investigation that included engine teardowns by December 11th identified the same defect, and by the end of January 2024, Hyundai had documented eighteen instances of broken valve springs in the 2024 Palisade models.

The root cause of these valve spring failures has been linked to damage incurred during the production process. If a valve spring breaks, it not only risks stalling the engine but, in rare cases, could also lead to the spring piercing the combustion chamber and being ejected through the engine block by the piston. This catastrophic scenario could potentially result in a crash or even a fire, posing a significant risk to both the vehicle’s occupants and others on the road.

Despite the potential dangers, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has yet to report any crashes, injuries, or fatalities associated with this issue in the United States. Hyundai has committed to addressing the defect by replacing the engine sub-assembly at no cost to the vehicle owners where necessary. This proactive approach aims to mitigate any risk to consumers and underscores Hyundai’s commitment to safety and customer service.

Owners of the 2024 Palisade are advised to check their vehicle’s status by visiting NHTSA.gov and entering their VIN number. The recall notifications to dealers and customers are scheduled for April 13th, 2024, ensuring that all affected parties are informed and can take the necessary steps to ensure their vehicle’s safety.

Interestingly, there has been no mention of the 2024 Kia Telluride in this recall, despite it sharing the same 3.8-liter V6 drivetrain as the Palisade. This omission raises questions about the scope of the issue and whether it may extend to other models utilizing the same engine. Hyundai’s swift action to recall and repair the affected Palisade models reflects the manufacturer’s dedication to maintaining high standards of reliability and safety.
