Smart’s new #5 SUV marks a significant shift for the brand with its larger size and up to 638 hp. The stylish crossover offers advanced features and a range of up to 435 miles.

Smart is expanding beyond its typical compact city cars with the new Smart #5, a significant departure featuring larger dimensions and impressive performance. Leaked images from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology reveal the production-ready electric SUV, which evolved from the Smart Concept #5 that debuted in April.

Although not as rugged as its concept predecessor, the #5 boasts a stylish crossover design similar to recent electric Kia models like the EV5 and EV9. Unlike previous Smart models, the new SUV is relatively large, measuring 185.2 inches in length, 75.6 inches in width, and 67.1 inches in height, comparable to the Audi Q6 e-tron. The wheelbase extends to 114.2 inches, with wheel sizes ranging from 18 to 21 inches.

Top-spec models weigh in at a hefty 5,401 lbs, heavier than the new BMW 7 Series, but this weight is supported by powerful drivetrain options. The lineup includes two single-motor RWD models producing 335 and 358 hp, and two dual-motor AWD variants with combined outputs of 579 hp and an impressive 638 hp. This top-spec model surpasses the power of a Lamborghini Huracán Evo, offering a top speed of 130 mph, while other models reach up to 124 mph.

The RWD models utilize lithium iron phosphate batteries, whereas the AWD trims feature nickel manganese cobalt packs. Reports indicate that the #5 will incorporate an 800-volt architecture, similar to the new Porsche Macan EV, enabling rapid charging times. A range of 435 miles is expected, though likely estimated using the generous CLTC cycle. The Concept #5’s 100 kWh battery pack claimed a range of 341 miles and could charge from 10-80% in just 15 minutes.
