The Golf R, featured in official teaser, confirms that both the hatchback and the wagon (Variant) bodystyles will benefit from the MK8.5 mid-lifecycle update.

The «near-production» prototypes of the Golf R and Golf R Variant are adorned with blue-themed camouflage wraps, similar to those in a previous teaser from a few months ago. This time, however, VW has peeled off some of the camo, revealing more of the updated design.

The updates include revised LED headlights and taillights, along with tweaked bumpers, giving the hot hatch a sharper look. The interior will also see enhancements, including a new 12.9-inch infotainment system, illuminated sliders, and physical buttons on the steering wheel, just like the other facelifted Golfs.

The Golf R Variant will receive the same treatment and is expected to be exclusively available in Europe and the UK. This fast wagon was never offered in North America, and Volkswagen’s Australian arm has confirmed its discontinuation in their market.

Volkswagen R, now a sub-brand for flagship performance models, uploaded the video teaser on Instagram and Facebook. R versions boast more power and all-wheel drive (AWD) capability compared to the front-wheel-drive (FWD) GTI, unlocking the Golf’s full potential.

The outgoing Golf R featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder engine, producing 316 hp (235 kW / 320 PS) in standard form, and up to 329 hp (245 kW / 333 PS) in the «20 Years» and «333» special editions. It remains to be seen if the facelifted version will bring any performance gains, edging closer to hyper hatches like the Audi RS3 Sportback and the Mercedes-AMG A45.

The powertrain is likely to be paired exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, without the six-speed manual option previously available in North America. This mirrors the facelifted Golf GTI, which debuted a few months ago. Besides the extra power, the Golf R features a sophisticated AWD system, resulting in improved performance.

Volkswagen has not announced a debut date for the updated Golf R, but based on the new teaser, it should be imminent. This year, the company is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Golf.
