Hyundai enters four Ioniq 5 Ns in Pikes Peak to set a new electric SUV record, showcasing the model’s high-performance capabilities with innovative technology.

Hyundai is set to make a splash at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb this June by entering four Ioniq 5 N vehicles with the aim of establishing a new record for electric production SUVs/crossovers with its innovative EV.

Following the Ioniq 5 N’s recognition as the 2024 World Performance Car, Hyundai is gearing up for a full-scale challenge at Pikes Peak. Two of the entries will be production-spec Ioniq 5 Ns, helmed by Paul Dallenbach and Ron Zaras, focusing on setting a record. The other two, modified versions, will be driven by WRC driver Dani Sordo and Robin Shute, competing in the Exhibition class.

As there isn’t an existing electric production SUV/crossover record at this iconic hill climb, Hyundai’s goal is to establish a pioneering benchmark time.

The production-spec Ioniq 5 Ns entering the race have undergone some minor modifications for the competition, including the installation of Recaro Pro Racer SPA Hans driver’s seats, Sabelt six-point racing harnesses, removal of the rear seats, addition of a roll cage, and a fire suppression system. Mechanically, these vehicles are consistent with the versions currently being delivered to customers.

Till Wartenberg, head of Hyundai’s N Brand and Motorsport, expressed confidence in the Ioniq 5 N’s capabilities, emphasizing Hyundai’s legacy of testing new technologies and products at Pikes Peak since 1992. The Ioniq 5 N is set to showcase the high-performance potential of electric vehicles to customers.

The Ioniq 5 N’s impressive performance is powered by an 84 kWh battery pack, with a 223 hp motor at the front and a 378 hp motor at the rear, delivering a standard output of 601 hp. This power can be boosted to 641 hp with the activation of the N Grin Boost function.
