Xiaomi’s first electric vehicle, the SU7, storms the market with record orders, challenging Tesla and Porsche with its impressive specs and affordable pricing.

Xiaomi, predominantly known for its smartphones, has made a grand entrance into the electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of its first car, the SU7. This mid-size sedan is not just another addition to the growing list of EVs; it’s a statement of intent from Xiaomi, aiming to shake up the market dominated by established players like Tesla and Porsche.

The SU7 is not just about impressive specifications; it’s about accessibility. Xiaomi has aggressively priced the SU7, starting at $29,900 for the 295 hp rear-wheel drive (RWD) version and going up to $41,500 for the all-wheel drive (AWD) 663 hp Max variant. This strategic pricing is part of Xiaomi’s plan to capture market share, even if it means incurring losses initially.

The reception to the SU7 has been nothing short of phenomenal, with Xiaomi securing 50,000 firm orders within just 27 minutes of its launch. This surge in demand within the initial minutes showcases the market’s appetite for a high-spec, affordably priced EV.

Design-wise, the SU7 has received nods from renowned designers, including Chris Bangle, known for his work with BMW. The car boasts a design and performance that can stand toe-to-toe with luxury brands like Porsche, coupled with a range that outperforms the Tesla Model 3 in China. Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, has highlighted that the SU7 surpasses the Model 3 in the majority of benchmark tests, particularly emphasizing its superior driving range of 435 miles, which eclipses the Tesla’s 377 miles in China.

The SU7 will be available in three variants, each designed to cater to different consumer needs, from the standard RWD version to the high-performance Max version. The commitment to performance and innovation is evident in the vehicle’s specs, including its fast charging capability and high-speed performance.

Xiaomi’s venture into the EV market is not just about launching a car; it’s about creating an ecosystem. The «Human x Car x Home» strategy aims to integrate the SU7 with Xiaomi’s range of devices and operating systems, enhancing the user experience. The car will support popular functionalities like Apple CarPlay and come with an array of Xiaomi-branded accessories, making the SU7 a truly connected car.

Moreover, Xiaomi is setting new benchmarks in manufacturing efficiency. The SU7 will be produced in a factory with highly automated processes, allowing for a production rate of one car every 76 seconds.

With the launch of the SU7, Xiaomi is poised to become a formidable player in the EV market, challenging established brands and redefining what consumers can expect from an electric car. Deliveries are set to begin in April, marking a new chapter for Xiaomi and the EV industry at large.
