Airbag Non-Deployment Leads to Major Stellantis Vehicle Recall

Stellantis recalls numerous Jeep, Ram, and Chrysler models due to a defect preventing airbag deployment, with inspections and necessary repairs starting May 3.

Stellantis has initiated a recall for 38,164 vehicles across its Jeep, Ram, and Chrysler brands due to a defect that could prevent airbags from deploying in the event of a crash. This recall spans various 2023 and 2024 models manufactured between March 30 and August 16 of the previous year. The issue traces back to a component from Stellantis supplier American Furukawa, Inc., specifically involving poorly performed internal welds within some steering column control modules. This flaw could compromise the connection between a vital cable and the busbar, potentially blocking the deployment signal to the driver’s airbag module during a collision.

To alert drivers of the potential problem, the vehicles are designed to illuminate an airbag warning light on the dashboard if the cable disconnects from the busbar. The recall includes specific models of the 2023 to 2024 Chrysler Pacificas and Voyagers, Jeep Gladiators, Grand Cherokees, Grand Wagoneers, Wagoneers, and Wranglers, along with certain Ram 1500s, 2500s, 3500s, 3500 Cab Chassis (with a GVWR of less than 10,000 lbs), 4500s, and 5500s.

Stellantis is set to begin notifying affected owners on May 3, directing them to bring their vehicles to a dealership for an inspection. If necessary, the steering column will be replaced with a new part that includes a clockspring with a correctly welded cable-to-busbar connection, addressing the defect and ensuring compliance with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regulations while mitigating safety risks.
