Mercedes teases its all-electric sports sedan on the AMG.EA platform, promising a liftback design, advanced axial-flux motors, and a late 2024 reveal.

Beneath the camouflage, Mercedes is developing its inaugural vehicle based on the AMG.EA platform, an all-electric sports sedan poised to succeed the current AMG 4-Door Coupe. Unlike its hybrid predecessor, this new model commits entirely to electric power, signaling a significant shift towards electrification for Mercedes’ performance vehicles.

The prototype hints at a liftback design, promising enhanced practicality over traditional sedans, and aligns with the current trend of offering versatile five-door configurations under the guise of «coupes». Among the teased features are an active rear spoiler and aerodynamic enhancements like front canards, hinting at a design philosophy influenced by the 2022 Vision AMG Concept.

With ambitions to rival the dynamic capabilities of the Porsche Taycan, this model is expected to introduce advanced axial-flux electric motors, noted for their efficiency and power-to-weight ratio. These motors are anticipated to deliver impressive performance figures while maintaining a compact and lightweight design.

The vehicle will also benefit from a newly developed battery pack, offering a substantial increase in energy density. This advancement, combined with the dedicated AMG.EA platform, is expected to yield a spacious interior by optimizing the vehicle’s proportions, such as extending the wheelbase and minimizing overhangs.

Currently undergoing rigorous testing in the harsh conditions of a Swedish frozen lake, the sports EV is set for further trials worldwide. While a market launch isn’t imminent within the year, an official unveiling could be on the horizon, potentially slated for late 2024 or early 2025.
