BMW Plant Dingolfing Debuts Electric 5 Series Touring
BMW’s Dingolfing plant starts production of the electric 5 Series Touring, marking a new era in premium electric mobility.
Today, the BMW Group Plant Dingolfing celebrated the beginning of production for the latest BMW 5 Series Touring. This vehicle sets a new standard in its class by offering a range of powertrains including petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and for the first time, a fully electric option. This makes the BMW i5 Touring the fourth electric vehicle to commence production at the Dingolfing plant in less than three years.
Plant Director Christoph Schröder highlighted the significance of the BMW 5 Series Touring for both Germany and Europe, noting the high anticipation among customers. He announced that the wait would end by the end of May when the new generation Touring, now in its sixth iteration, will be available at dealerships and the first units will be delivered to customers. Orders for the new model are already being accepted.
Since its debut in 1991, the Dingolfing Plant has been the exclusive manufacturer of the BMW 5 Series Touring, producing over 1.2 million units. The latest BMW 5 Series Touring continues to be produced flexibly on the same line as the BMW 5 Series Sedan and the BMW 4 and 6 Series models. The plant has seen investments of approximately 80 million euros for the production of the new Touring.
Plant Director Christoph Schröder stated, «The BMW 5 Series is integral to our identity here in Dingolfing,» and described the introduction of the new Touring as a pivotal moment in the evolution of their successful series. Last year, BMW 5 Series vehicles constituted about a third of Dingolfing’s total production. With the addition of the new Touring model, production numbers are expected to increase significantly in 2024, potentially approaching 50 percent.
