The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, also known as the G-Wagen, is a renowned four-wheel drive automobile that has its roots as a military off-roader. Its development was initiated in 1972, resulting from a suggestion by the Shah of Iran, an influential Mercedes shareholder. The G-Class is known for its distinctive boxy styling and robust body-on-frame construction, featuring three fully locking differentials, a rarity among passenger vehicles. Despite the introduction of the intended replacement, the unibody Mercedes-Benz GL-Class in 2006, the G-Class continues to be produced, making it one of Daimler’s longest-produced vehicles, spanning over four decades. A second-generation G-Class (W463) was introduced in 2018 with significant updates to the chassis, powertrain, body, and interior. In 2023, Mercedes announced plans for a smaller version of the G-Class, termed «little G».
