The BMW iX, first launched in 2022, represents BMW’s foray into the high-end electric SUV market, blending traditional BMW luxury with the latest in electric vehicle technology. The iX is available in two main trim levels: the xDrive50 and the more powerful M60.
The xDrive50 offers a robust 516 horsepower, while the M60 ramps up performance to 610 horsepower, providing a dynamic driving experience. Both models feature all-wheel drive, but the M60 includes a more potent rear motor, enhancing its power delivery. This makes the iX M60 remarkably quick for its size, achieving 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds, despite a curb weight of nearly 5,800 pounds.
Interior luxury is a key feature of the iX, with options such as a Bowers & Wilkins sound system enhancing the experience. The standard setup includes a 12.3-inch instrument display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Comfort is further supported by four-zone automatic climate control, heated seats, and a panoramic glass roof.
On the technology front, the iX shines with advanced features like a Level 2 onboard charger capable of delivering 11 kW, which significantly speeds up home charging times. For public charging, the iX can utilize DC fast-charging stations with up to 195 kW, although finding a station that can deliver the maximum output of 350 kW to fully utilize the vehicle’s capacity is ideal.
The iX also stands out with its unique soundscape, created under the direction of film composer Hans Zimmer, which adds a futuristic aura to the driving experience. These sounds emphasize the vehicle’s acceleration and deceleration, although they can be turned off if preferred.
Handling and ride quality are noteworthy, with the iX described as surprisingly agile for its size, thanks to a finely tuned air suspension system with Comfort and Sport settings. The vehicle’s substantial weight aids stability, particularly on highways, where it maintains a quiet and stable ride, even at high speeds.
In summary, the BMW iX combines impressive electric performance with the luxurious and technologically advanced features expected from BMW, making it a strong contender in the luxury electric SUV market against rivals like the Tesla Model X and Mercedes-EQ EQS SUV.
