The Volkswagen ID.3, a significant model in the Volkswagen lineup, represents the brand’s foray into the electric vehicle market as part of its ID. series. Introduced as a compact family car, the ID.3 is notable for being the first production vehicle to utilize Volkswagen’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB) platform, which was first showcased in 2019.

In March 2023, Volkswagen introduced a refreshed version of the ID.3, featuring slight adjustments to the front bumper and air intakes, alongside enhancements in interior material quality. The ID.3 is available in various configurations, including the «ID.3 Pro Performance» and «ID.3 Pro S» models, both equipped with a 150 kW electric motor. The key difference between these models lies in their battery capacity, with the Pro Performance featuring a 58 kWh battery and the Pro S a larger 77 kWh battery.

The ID.3’s design emphasizes a new era of mobility with a clear, puristic exterior and a friendly front-end design characterized by its distinctive headlights. The interior offers space comparable to a mid-size car, thanks to the MEB platform’s design with short overhangs and a long wheelbase. Most vehicle functions are managed via touch controls or the «Hello ID.» intelligent voice control, and the augmented reality head-up display integrates information seamlessly with the driver’s view.

The ID.3 includes advanced safety technology such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), radar cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and more. Despite its comprehensive safety suite, it notably lacks speed-sign recognition and rear AEB. The Euro NCAP awarded the ID.3 a five-star safety rating, with high scores in adult and child occupant protection.

When it comes to infotainment, the ID.3 comes with a large screen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, some users have found the touch controls a bit challenging to use while driving, particularly because the tabs below the screen are not illuminated at night. Volkswagen is reportedly working on updates to improve the infotainment system’s usability.

The ID.3 offers two battery options as of mid-2023, with the 58 kWh battery providing a range of about 265 miles and the larger 77 kWh battery extending the range to approximately 347 miles. Charging times vary depending on the battery size and charging infrastructure, but rapid charging can significantly reduce waiting times.

Overall, the Volkswagen ID.3 is positioned as a pioneer in the new mobility era, blending innovative technology, safety, and sustainability in a compact electric vehicle package.
