Cupra unveils the electric VZ, a high-performance variant of the Born model, boasting 322 hp, a 335-mile range, and unique styling options.

Launched by Volkswagen Group’s offshoot, Cupra, in 2018, the brand is now debuting its inaugural electric performance car. This new addition, a sportier version of the Born compact, carries the «VZ» moniker, standing for «veloz,» which means «fast» in Spanish. This first electric model from Cupra boasts significant enhancements.

Equipped with a more powerful rear-wheel-drive electric motor, the VZ version delivers an impressive 322 hp and 545 Nm (402 lb-ft) of torque. This represents a substantial increase from the previous top Cupra Born variant, enhancing its performance with a quicker acceleration time of 5.7 seconds to reach 62 mph and a top speed increased to 124 mph.

Beyond the powertrain enhancements, the Born VZ features unique 20-inch wheels, some of which are performance-oriented and forged, and an expanded 79 kWh battery capacity, extending its range to an estimated 335 miles. Handling improvements include sharper steering and refined suspension, while braking responsiveness has also been enhanced.

Stylistically, the Born VZ is available in a distinctive Dark Forest color, alongside the option for Midnight Black, and sports a dark chrome «VZ» logo on the tailgate, complementing the Cupra branding. The interior is upgraded with exclusive, supportive seats distinct from the standard models, mirroring the premium seating found in other high-performance vehicles like the Formentor VZ5, which shares its engine with Audi.

The top-tier Born model also sees an increase in infotainment screen size to 12.9 inches, with added functionality like an illuminated touch slider for climate and volume control. Optionally, a 425-watt Sennheiser sound system with 10 speakers is available. Standard features include paddle shifters behind the steering wheel for selecting energy recuperation levels.

Set to hit the European market in the latter part of the year, the Born VZ will later be joined by its Volkswagen counterpart, the ID.3 GTX, expanding the competitive field in the electric performance segment, alongside models like the MG4 XPower and the upcoming Alpine A290.
