Introducing «G580 with EQ Technology»: The New Electric Mercedes G-Class
Mercedes reveals the electric G-Class, «G580 with EQ Technology», debuting at Auto China with advanced quad-motor setup and innovative battery technology.
The eagerly anticipated electric version of the Mercedes G-Class now boasts an official name. Contrary to earlier speculation about abandoning the EQ moniker, the model retains it, adopting the title «G580 with EQ Technology» for its production version, set to be unveiled at Auto China in Beijing this month.
Given the «G580» designation, it’s inferred that this model surpasses the G550 in power. The 2025 G-Class lineup has shifted from a V-8 to a more eco-friendly mild-hybrid, inline-six engine, delivering 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. However, it’s unlikely the electric variant will exceed the performance of the AMG G63, which retains its robust V-8 engine, producing 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque.
The electric G-Class is anticipated to feature a quad-motor setup, with one motor per wheel, and a battery with an estimated 100 kWh capacity, aiming for a range exceeding 200 miles. Despite not being ideal for an SUV of its size, this range is expected. A more efficient high-density battery pack with silicon anode technology is slated for release in 2025. The vehicle also boasts impressive off-road specs, including 32-degree approach and 35-degree departure angles, and 9.8 inches of ground clearance.
Although not Mercedes’ first venture into quad-motor EVs, with the SLS AMG Electric Drive holding that distinction since 2012, the G580 with EQ Technology is designed to be a powerhouse, as hinted by G brand chief Emmerich Schiller, with a weight under 7,716 pounds.
The 2024 Auto China event will also spotlight an updated EQS and the debut of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance, featuring a plug-in hybrid V-8. Additionally, new offerings from Maybach and the E-Class series are expected to make their debut.
The GT63 S E Performance will first appear on April 20 at the AMG Brand Night Event in Shanghai, coinciding with the Chinese F1 weekend, followed by the electric G’s debut on April 24. The Auto China show kicks off on April 25, starting with the press day.
