It was first introduced as the LP500 prototype at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show, marking a significant departure from Lamborghini’s previous models with its mid-engine layout and scissor doors, a design ethos aimed at improving performance, aerodynamics, and aesthetics. The Countach broke from Lamborghini’s tradition of naming cars after bulls, instead taking its name from a Piedmontese exclamation of astonishment. Over its production life, the Countach evolved through several models, incorporating technological and design innovations while maintaining its distinctive wedge shape and performance ethos.

The Lamborghini Countach featured a Bizzarrini-designed 5.2-liter V12 engine with a 60° cylinder bank angle, four valves per cylinder, Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, and electronic ignition. Initially, the prototype had a 3.9-liter engine, but later models like the 5000 Quattrovalvole were equipped with a 5.2-liter engine, enhancing performance. The car was celebrated for its longitudinal rear (longitudinale posteriore) engine orientation, contributing to its distinct driving dynamics and performance capabilities.
