Porsche Confirms End of Combustion 718 Production in 2025, Electric Models Coming Next Year
Porsche will cease production of the combustion-powered 718 Cayman and Boxster by October 2025. The new electric 718 models are set to debut next year.
Last year, Porsche R&D chief Dr. Michael Steiner mentioned the automaker’s plan to «try to overlap both [models],» referring to the current combustion-powered 718 Cayman and Boxster (codenamed 982) alongside their electric successors (983). While market conditions were considered influential, they were not the sole factor in deciding whether to sell both models simultaneously.
However, it now appears that the decision has been made, and it’s not favorable for fans of combustion engines. According to a tweet from Zerin Dube, the «end of production for all 982 models is currently planned for October 2025.»
Electric 718 Cayman & Boxster Expected Next Year
The battery-powered 718 models are slated to debut next year. Porsche has announced upgrades to its Zuffenhausen production facility, enabling the electric 718 to be built on the same line as the gas-powered version thanks to a «Flexiline.» This setup allows Porsche to adapt production based on market demands, indicating potential flexibility despite the planned end date for combustion models.
European Market Changes
The Boxster and Cayman have already been discontinued in Europe, not due to emissions, but because updating the 982 models to comply with the EU’s latest cybersecurity laws would have been too costly. This same issue led to the early end of the combustion Macan in the EU, now replaced by an all-electric version.
Future Prospects
While the official end for the combustion 718 is nearing, Porsche might release a final special edition to commemorate the internal combustion era, staying true to their tradition of creating celebrated special editions.
