BMW Reveals Concept Skytop with Potential Limited Production
BMW’s Concept Skytop, inspired by the 503 and Z8, may see a limited production of 20-25 units. Based on the M8 Convertible, it promises luxury and performance, with a possible market launch in late 2025 or early 2026.
This past weekend, BMW unveiled the Concept Skytop, a unique design that evokes the classic BMW 503 and Z8. Depending on public reception, BMW may produce a limited run of this model. BMW Group Design Director Adrian van Hooydonk mentioned to Automotive News that if greenlit, 20 to 25 units could be manufactured. Since the Skytop is based on the BMW M8 Convertible and incorporates only a few unconventional design elements, transitioning to production would not be overly complex.
At the previous year’s Villa d’Este event, BMW showcased the Concept Touring Coupé, a BMW Z4 with a fixed roof. Positive feedback led BMW to consider a limited production run, with rumors suggesting 50 units at $250,000 each. However, BMW later abandoned these plans without explanation.
The Concept Skytop might succeed where the Touring Coupé did not, possibly due to its M8 foundation offering more space and luxury, appealing to high-end clients. BMW’s experience with low-volume cars, such as the $780,000 BMW 3.0 CSL, which was hand-assembled at the BMW Dingolfing plant (also producing Rolls-Royce parts), suggests that the same facility might handle Skytop production.
Automotive News anticipates the Skytop could hit the market by late 2025 or early 2026. During this period, Mercedes is expected to reveal more about its ultra-luxury Mythos program. BMW might be keen to position Alpina as a brand bridging the gap between BMW and Rolls-Royce, with the Skytop concept exemplifying Alpina’s blend of M performance and RR luxury.
