Porsche Announces First Hybrid 911 with Record Nürburgring Lap
Porsche’s hybrid 911 debuts on May 28, featuring advanced performance with a 7:16.934 Nürburgring lap, outperforming previous models.
Porsche has officially completed the development of its first hybrid 911 model, slated for a grand reveal on May 28. This model, an updated version within the facelifted 992.2 generation, boasts an impressive Nürburgring lap time of 7:16.934, outpacing a similar model from the earlier 992.1 lineup by 8.7 seconds. Notably, this time also bests the 641-horsepower 992.1 Turbo S, underscoring its enhanced performance capabilities. The lap was completed by Porsche brand ambassador Jörg Bergmeister, using standard road tires and an optional fixed-wing aero package.
Over 3.1 million miles of rigorous testing on tracks, country roads, and urban environments have been conducted to refine this performance-oriented hybrid powertrain, preparing it for mass production. The development has been so comprehensive that Porsche’s VP for the 718 and 911 models remarked that they left nothing to chance during the process.
Details on the hybrid system suggest it will not be a plug-in but will utilize a smaller battery primarily for enhancing torque and reducing turbo lag, potentially positioning this vehicle as a new iteration of the 572-hp 911 Turbo. Visually, the entire 911 lineup will see updates including a newly designed front fascia with vertical vanes, a change that has stirred mixed reactions among enthusiasts.
This upcoming hybrid variant is described by Porsche CEO Oliver Blume as an «ultra-sporty hybrid,» similar to those found in racing applications, and will be available exclusively with all-wheel drive. The reveal later this month will also include base Carrera models, with more high-performance trims like the GTS and GT3 expected to debut separately at later dates.
