Hyundai IONIQ 5 Robotaxi: Pioneering the Road to Autonomous Mobility
Experience Hyundai's groundbreaking moment with the IONIQ 5 robotaxi, navigating the complexities of a driver's license test, showcasing advanced autonomous driving capabilities and promising a future of inclusive mobility.
Hyundai Motor Company recently launched a campaign film showcasing the all-electric, self-driving IONIQ 5 robotaxi. The film demonstrates the vehicle successfully completing tasks similar to those in a U.S. driver’s license test. The video was designed to illustrate the safety and reliability of the IONIQ 5 robotaxi’s autonomous technology, as it navigated through road driving in Las Vegas, showcasing its exceptional performance.
The film shares the story of Pearl Outlaw, a visually impaired American, and her mother, Ruth. Pearl’s inability to obtain a driver’s license due to her condition, Retinitis Pigmentosa, is a poignant reminder of the mobility challenges faced by people with physical impairments. The narrative emphasizes the potential of autonomous driving technology to provide independence and mobility freedom to those who are unable to drive themselves.
Kandice Jones, a DMV Certified Driving Examiner with 25 years of experience, who has tested the capabilities of the IONIQ 5 robotaxi, is featured in the campaign. She treated the robotaxi’s test with the same rigor and criteria as a human test taker, focusing on speed control, lane changes, maneuvering, complete stops, left turns, maintaining lanes, and reaction times. The IONIQ 5 robotaxi impressed with its performance, navigating through various driving scenarios in Las Vegas efficiently.
The IONIQ 5 robotaxi represents a major step forward in mobility technologies, embodying Hyundai Motor Group’s collaboration with autonomous driving technology developer Motional. This partnership has led to the development and testing of advanced automotive platforms and self-driving technologies. The robotaxi is equipped with an advanced sensor suite that includes LiDAR, radar, and cameras, ensuring consistent driving performance across different environments.
Sungwon Jee, Senior Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer at Hyundai Motor Company, stated that Hyundai aims to showcase the safety and trustworthiness of the IONIQ 5 robotaxi through this campaign. Hyundai is committed to advancing AI-based autonomous driving technology that promises to bring positive changes to customers' everyday lives, underlining their dedication to the freedom of mobility.
