BMW’s Enhanced Quad-Motor i4 Prototype: A Glimpse into the Future

BMW’s quad-motor i4, first introduced as a prototype in 2022, has been spotted again, this time showcasing several new features.

The recently sighted BMW quad-motor prototype, known as ’Ashley,’ might look similar to its predecessor at first glance, but upon closer inspection, it boasts a series of enhancements. Among these are a redesigned front splitter, innovative triangular flaps, a fresh camouflage wrap, and what has been described by the spy photographer as a «brand new hood.»

Further updates are evident at the rear, with the addition of a new lip spoiler and an updated bumper that incorporates carbon fiber elements. An apparent upgrade to the braking system is also notable, featuring red calipers and seemingly larger disc brakes.

These significant modifications suggest a serious development phase for the prototype, underscored by the engineers’ protective demeanor during testing. Their casual approach with the previous prototype shifted to a more guarded stance with this updated version, culminating in security intervention when photography was attempted.

This level of secrecy has led to speculation that this prototype may be in line for an BMW i4 M variant, rather than merely serving as a testbed for future Neue Klasse models. While the i4 M50 has already found success, and the M3/M4 series is not expected to go electric until circa 2027, there appears to be an opening for a high-performance i4 M to emerge in the interim, although official confirmation is still pending.

Amidst the speculation, one thing remains clear: the quad-motor setup announced in 2022, anticipated to deliver over 1,000 horsepower and capable of sophisticated torque vectoring and tank turns, signifies BMW’s continued innovation in electric vehicle technology.
